Biographical Note

Duncan Montgomery Gray was born in Canton, Mississippi in 1926. He attended high school in Greenwood, Mississippi before graduating
in 1944 from Central High in Jackson. Upon graduation, he entered the Navy and was sent to Tulane University on the Navy-12
Program. In 1953 he graduated with a Bachelor of Divinity from the University of the South, Sewanee. In 1954 Gray was one
of the few members that comprised the diocesan department of Christian Social Relations when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled
that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. Gray urged the diocese to take a stand on segregation and took it
upon himself to draft the radical document entitled, “The Church Considers the Supreme Court Decision” in which he used biblical
references to support his argument that racial segregation was a sin. As a fourth generation Mississippian, Duncan Gray, Jr.
devoted his pastoral career to the parishes and communities of Mississippi. From 1953 to 1957, Gray served as Vicar of Calvary
Church, Cleveland, and priest-in-charge of Grace Church, Rosedale. His tenure as Rector of St. Peter’s, Oxford, and priest-in-charge
of Holy Innocents, Como lasted from 1957-1965. Gray was best known for his work as a civil rights activist, especially his
efforts at the University of Mississippi in the fall of 1962 during the school’s integration by James Meredith. Gray was rector
of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Oxford at the time and encouraged his parishioners to “”uproot and cast out” the seeds
of “anger and hatred, bitterness and prejudice.” During the Ole Miss riots, in which two people were killed, Gray boldly attempted
to calm the crowd of rioters as he clung to the Confederate statue in the campus square, but was ultimately absorbed into
the crowd.

After Oxford, Gray served as rector at St. Paul’s in Meridian until 1974 when he was elected as the Bishop of Mississippi,
a position he held for nineteen years (1974-1993). As bishop during a turbulent time, Gray supported the controversial revision
of the 1928 Book of Common Prayer and the ordination of women. His other diocesan commitments included roles as chairman of
the Mississippi Religious Leadership Conference; president of the Standing Committee; dean of the Board of Examining Chaplains;
and chairman of the departments of College Work, Christian Education, Communications, and Christian Social Relations. Bishop
Gray also served the Church as chairman and member of the General Convention’s Standing Commission on Constitution and Canons
and as chairman of the House of Bishops’ Committee on Canons and Committee on Rules. Additionally he held the position of
vice chairman of the Board of The Archives of the Episcopal Church. From 1991 to 1997, Duncan Gray Jr. was chancellor of Sewanee:
The University of the South. He was the subject of a 1997 book, And Also With You: Duncan Gray and the American Dilemma, written
by the Will Campbell.
